Like everyone in the world with a wall calendar, sometimes I write notes to myself there about upcoming events -- birthdays, doctors' appointments, trips, lectures.

Today, Thursday 12th, the note that I wrote on my calendar clearly says, and only says, "Thursday."

Months ago, I was talking to a friend about Lovecraft, and when she asked me when he died, I said "no one knows," by which I meant "no one cares," but she took me rather at my word for a moment, as if no one knew when he died -- as if, he could be behind you right now, or the Call of Cthulhu is coming from inside the house.
